Many people like to wonder about the legal way in which a person can own land, Law No. 27/2021 of 10/06/2021 that regulates land in Rwanda in its article 9 clearly explains how to own land.

This article states that Land is inherited, bequeathed, bought, gifted, distributed, distributed or received by a competent authority in a legal manner. who own land according to one of the following land tenure systems:

Long-term lease: it is a way of owning land based on a long-term contract between the State and a person giving them the right to land. The term of permanent land lease is not more than ninety nine (99) years which can be extended.

Inkondabutaka: a form of land ownership based on an agreement between the State and a person giving them absolute and permanent rights.

The permanent lease in the law mentioned above was taken for 20 and 30 years due to the fact that the land intended for use can be extended for 99 years without asking for it. This means that if you own land in order to legally own it, you must register it. If you don't have any of these documents, you are restricting your rights to the land, including the fact that it can be taken by someone else, you can't sell it, you can't give it a mortgage, etc.
